Last week in "Muse," Tom threw a fit because Harry and B'Elanna were missing. Was it Harry, B'Elanna, or both he was concerned about?
We got our answer this week. Seven announces that Torres is dead, and Tom's reaction is mild surprise. He looks more like he's suffering an attack of gas than like he's just lost his lover. Compare this to the scenery-chewing that ensued when Harry was missing in "Collective." Tom is in love with one of his crewmates, and it ain't B'Elanna Torres. ;-) |
This episode was extremely frustrating. There were many moments to warm the hearts of long-time Voyager fans, but it was also bloody infuriating. (Pardon the pun.) In particular, what they did to Kes was disappointing and a slap in the face for anyone who remembered her with fondness. (I also suspect the whole episode would have been extremely confusing for the casual viewer.)
The whole premise just sucked. They bring back a regular character whom we haven't seen for years, but deprive us of any real reunion scenes. And they totally trashed the character, in more ways than one. Kes, who was always the kind, empathic, self-sacrificing one, has become a vengeful maniac. Okay, people change, but with a regular character like Kes, they owed us a better explanation for the change.
Though I found this episode entertaining enough, I wish they'd never made it. I was happier imagining Kes exploring the galaxy as an immortal energy being, than seeing her as bitter, lonely, miserable, and dying. She didn't deserve this.
Notes:
I loved the opening scene with Tuvok and Janeway. It was worth seeing twice. Tuvok's "It was a fire hazard" was a funny and very Spockian comment. He needs more lines like that.
They established in "Flashback" that Tuvok is well over 100 years old. And now he's "nearing the big three digits." What, does Janeway count in base 12 or something?
And how can Janeway not know Tuvok's birthday? It must be part of his service record, and as captain, she would have access to it.
Janeway was at Tuvok's daughter's kohlinar? Tuvok's daughter is still a child. He does have three sons, at least one of whom is an adult, but his daughter is way too young for kohlinar.
What's Kes doing piddling around in a shuttlecraft? When last we saw her, she was so evolved she was flying around the galaxy without a spaceship.
Why didn't Seven have Torres transported to Sickbay, instead of just announcing she was dead? We know the Doc can often revive "dead" patients. Harry bet his life on it in "Emanations."
Cute continuity moments: Paris offering to teach Kes to pilot shuttlecraft (cf "Parturition"). The Doc trying to choose a name. Talking about how B'Elanna is doing as chief engineer (cf "Parallax"). We see old faces like Carey and Wildman again. Gee, the writers have seen some pre-Seven episodes. But not "Flashback," apparently.
