One Big Rowdy Family

Transcript from UPN news, 11/17/99

What you see during the weekly flight of Voyager is just part of the story. Pat Collins went behind the scenes to get the other side.

Collins: Last August, I visited the Voyager crew on the Paramount lot in Hollywood. That day, they were shooting the episode which aired tonight. ["One Small Step"] Behind the scenes, the Voyager cast is like one big rowdy family.

Garrett: Listen to the cackle coming from Jeri Ryan over there.

Jeri: This is a cast of psychopaths. I don't know if you've spent any time with many of the cast members. Everybody here is insane, like certifiable lunatic insane. All the men are just completely out of their minds.
Collins: And all the men are also pranksters, joke tellers, and one of them does impressions.

Garrett: (as George Takei) If I was to talk to you like Sulu, this is how I would talk to you. I would say, "Oh, my."

Collins: Ok, Garrett, give us your best shot at the Doc.

Garrett: (as the Doc) Just remember, Kes, anybody can stargaze on the bridge but the real action happens in Sickbay. See a video clip of this! [600kb]

Collins: That's the Doc, Robert Picardo, call him Bob, directing in his favorite $20 Hawaiian shirt.
Collins: Tim Russ, you notice, is comfy in his bathrobe.
Collins: Ethan Phillips is wearing three hours worth of make-up.
Ethan: That slot in my nose is for credit cards.
Collins: The cast has been on this set, fully made up, since 5 in the morning. Exactly what substance is on Dawson's face?

Roxann: It's rubber. Rubber, foam, Latex. Rubber.

Collins: That's what it's made of?

Roxann: Whatever it is, it's not comfortable.

Collins: And we learned other trade secrets, like what the men have on under those jumpsuits.
Garrett: Some of the men have had to wear girdles, unfortunately.
Collins: And how do they remember all that techno babble in the script?

Beltran: The technobabble is really difficult, so the way to get around it is you just find opportune places to put the dialogue. I put them everywhere. Coffee cups, right on the bottom of the coffee cup, and I'm getting ready to take a sip and I'm looking at the coffee and I go, oh, that's my line.

Collins: If you catch Jeri Ryan not making eye contact in some scenes, there is a very good reason.

Jeri: I've learned that any time I have a scene, particularly a one on one scene with any of the men, I just know not even to look at them. I look over their head or I'll be there all day, because I'll laugh so hard I'll have make-up running down my face. We do more laughing than accomplishing things much of the time.

Collins: When the cameras roll, it's back to the business of surviving in space.

Seven: I believe Voyager's presence in the Delta Quadrant is no accident. You and the crew have been stranded here intentionally.

Chakotay: By whom?

Seven: Captain Janeway.

Collins: Next week in the "Voyager Conspiracy" episode, the Captain is accused of sabotage and incites a civil war. I'm Pat Collins, UPN 9 News.
