Favorite Star Trek Characters

Transcript from UPN news, 12/01/99

Earlier tonight on UPN 9, Star Trek fans took the ultimate trek, a one-hour voyage through the show's greatest moments. We have been asking for your favorite moments from the series the past week, and thousands of you have weighed in. Now Pat Collins is joining us with the results. I understand it has been a terrific turnout.

Collins: We've got the viewers' favorites. But first, like they do on all the award shows, we will hear from Patrick Stewart, Jeri Ryan, and some other cast members. They have favorites, too, you know, as we look at the longest running prime-time drama in television history.

Kirk: These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds....

Collins: A five-year mission became a 30-year odyssey. With it came a cast of memorable characters. From all those characters, we asked the Star Trek stars to name their favorite.

Stewart: I have got to confess that I'm a Data fan. Not just of the character but of the actor, too.

Ryan: You know, you gotta go with the tribbles. You gotta go with the tribbles.

Picardo: The dear late DeForest Kelley was my favorite character. I had the pleasure of meeting De on a few occasions, and I said to him, "I like to think I'm paying homage to you." He said, "Oh, you mean you steal from me."

Phillips: Bones. I just thought he was terrific. And Scotty.

Mulgrew: I like Bill Shatner. You know, he's got that western, easy, shoot-from-the-hip, grab the girl, have a beer, grrr, I'm gonna run this ship. He's got a manner that I really like in a man.

Russ: I would have to go to the original series. I would have to go to Spock's character.

Sirtis: It would be a tossup between Picard and Data.

Wang: I walked up to him and I said, "Mr. Stewart!" I said, "Hi, I don't know if you remember me. I'm Garr-" He said "I know who you are." I said "What?!" He said, "I saw the first episode. Excellent work." At that point, I felt like I was knighted. I mean, he's sitting there, he's like royalty. He's Star Trek royalty!"

Collins: And now it's time to find out your favorites. Thousands of you went to our web site to vote in our Star Trek survey, and answer these three questions:

"Who is the all-time favorite Star Trek character?"
"Who is Star Trek greatest captain?"
"Who was Star Trek greatest villain?"

Time is up, and we want to thank the thousands and thousands of you who voted, and here are the results. Spock, Mr. Spock is Star Trek's all-time favorite character. Data was second, Seven of Nine was three. For the greatest captain, the viewers named Picard as the man they most want in the captain's chair. James T. Kirk was a very close second. Captain Janeway, a distant third. For the greatest villain, the Borg was the runaway winner. Khan was second, Q third. What happened to the Klingons? I voted for them, but not enough of you did. Thanks again for all of you who voted.
