Memorial

Harry is awfully grumpy, yelling Tom for leaving his dirty plate in the replicator.

Tom tries to mollify Harry, but Harry continues to pout.
The return of the heroes: B'Elanna hangs on Tom's arm, but he only has eyes for Harry.

Tom freaks out while watching TV. Harry freaks out in a Jeffries Tube.
The Doc lectures "Ensign Eager" about working too hard, and forces him to take two days off.

(I can just see what two weeks on that shuttle mission must have been like. Harry worked 18 hour days, but I'm not so sure Tom did. I wonder if that explains some of Harry's annoyance.)

Tom and Harry piece their memories together.
Tom is so adorable when he's desolate and haunted.
Harry in full flashback mode.
Harry flips out in the briefing room.
Tom takes Harry into his arms to comfort him. Awww.....
Hey, Harry's hair is long enough to fall over his forehead again. Yes!

Tom and Harry argue against repairing the memorial.
As they prepare to leave, Tom and Harry exchange a meaningful look.

I liked this one. Tom and Harry as The Odd Couple in the opening scene was hilarious.

The characterization in this very good (with one exception). It is just like Harry to work 18-hour days for two weeks. No wonder he was crabby. And to keep on working just as hard once he returns to the ship. (While Tom plops down in front of the TV and sucks down beer.) Loved the scene with Harry and the Doc in sickbay. (Poor Harry does not look happy when the Doc calls him "Ensign Eager"!) And the way the Doc blackmailed him into taking two days off, by threatening to make it three if he didn't give in - sounds like he's used to dealing with Harry. Of course, there was some lovely Harry angst, and his interaction with Tuvok in the cave scene was great. (It was a hint of the mentor relationship that started back in "Alter Ego.")

Neelix was terrific here - not the clown he usually is. Even Seven treated him with respect. (Hallelujah! We don't see much of Seven or the Doc here. And when we do, it's not with each other. I like the characters, but damn, they're overused. It's good to see them in smaller roles, interacting with lesser beings like Harry and Neelix.)

The only characterization I disliked was that of B'Elanna. She turned into Donna Reed. Almost literally. (Note the quarters decorated '50s style.) And she acts like a '50s housewife. She waits on Tom hand and foot. He complains she forgot the beer, and she jumps to get it for him. (Are his legs broken?) He ignores her to watch TV, drink beer, and eat junk food. After being away bonding with Harry for two weeks? I don't know many women who'd put up with that, but B'Elanna does.

On the good side, P/T is certainly no threat to P/K. What an awful relationship. He takes her for granted. And once again, he gets possessed and abuses her. (That excuse is getting old, Tommy-boy.) And once again, Tom and B'Elanna have a huge fight...and there's no real reconciliation on-screen.

Tom and Harry, on the other hand, were great in this episode. This was a true ensemble episode, not about their relationship, but it shone through anyway. Harry is very grumpy in the opening scene, but the way Tom keeps looking at him...there's more chemistry there than in the kiss he gives B'Elanna as they exit the hangar. (Notice that Tom and B'Elanna rarely look at each other, unless they are fighting?) There's that lovely scene in the briefing room, where distraught Harry ends up cradled in Tom's arms. That ending scene, where they seem to communicate with silent glances. Sigh.

And the sheer angst of this episode! Both Tom and Harry are "traumatized." Shades of "The Chute"! And each understands what the other is going through. (B'Elanna tries to help Tom, but she just doesn't understand, and is once again left out in the cold.)

All in all, I loved this. Not just for the P/K, but because it was a fine ensemble episode. Such were common in the first two seasons, but are rare birds today. More, more.
