Tsunkatse

The boys plan their bets.
Harry brags that he's a Parisses Squares champion.
Tom teases Harry about being a clarinet-playing wimp.
Harry challenges Tom to "go a few rounds."
Tom rises to the challenge: "Any time, any place."
Tom reacts to being told he punches like a Ferengi.
Gee, Tom really does punch like a Ferengi.

The boys engage in a mock-fight, to the amusement of Chakotay and Torres.

Not a profound episode or anything, but it was fun. That P/K scene was so cute. The look on Tom's face when Harry told him, "You punch like a Ferengi"! (Harry's quite the card these days, isn't he?)

Some nice C/T in this ep, too. They really make a much better couple that P/T.

I have to say, I didn't care for that scene with Tom and Seven. I found Tom extremely unlikable there. Standing around complaining about how dames always overpack. And then telling Seven that B'Elanna secretly sleeps with a teddy bear. Seven, whom B'Elanna hates, and who is not exactly discreet. How could he? (Hmmm. Either he secretly hates B'Elanna, or he's intentionally trying to sabotage their relationship. ;-)

It was rather ironic to see our heroes - Paris, Kim, Chakotay, and Neelix, the very same ones who got a raw lesson in the evil of violence last week in "Memorial" - cheering in the arena. I guess we're supposed to believe that they didn't know about the "red matches," that go to the death. Sure. They know the lifetime records of various tsunkatse warriors, but not that sometimes matches go to the death?

Trek has always been a little schizophrenic about this. One the one hand, the Federation is supposed to be so advanced and peaceful. On the other hand, sports like boxing and Parrises Squares are still popular. Boxing, which many people today would like to see banned. And Parrises Squares, so violent that sometimes little girls die playing it. ("Real Life")
